The Albertson Volunteer Fire Department was organized and chartered July 30, 1973. The first board of directors were R.J. Taylorr, James H. Parker III, Aaron Smith, Dennis Stroud, Billy W. Patterson, Murphy Ray Williams, and Ted Grady.
On October 28, 1973, the department purchased a 1969 Ford Fire Pumper truck, and the total cost for the truck and fire equipment was $13,295.70. A loan for five to seven years was obtained from Southern Bank and Trust Co., Warsaw, North Carolina.
During the fiscal years July 1973 through July 1975, the firemen and community worked very hard on different money making projects, earning a total of $22,663.31. During 1974, a 2400 square foot firehouse was built with most of the labor from the firemen themselves. The first fire meeting was held in Peary Davis.
In September 1975, a ’65 Dodge skeleton truck was purchased to make a water wagon for the department. The cost to finish the truck would be approximately $5,000, but it would turn the fire district into a four mile district, at present with only one truck it was a three mile district.
The department had approximately 20 active firemen and 15 inactive members. Asset and liabilities are as follows:
The radio equipment was connected directly with the Duplin County Emergency System located in the courthouse in Kenansville, NC. When a fire was spotted, anyone could dial “0” and ask for ZENITH 113. She would connect the caller, at no charge, to the dispatcher in Kenansville, who would in turn sounds our fire alarm at the station. Information from the caller would be given to the firemen answering the call, with the dispatcher standing by at Kenansville 24 hours.
The department goals for 1976, were to pave the front of the firehouse, paint and complete the building, complete the water wagon, and building cabinets for the kitchen. The money for the cabinets were made by the Fireladies Auxiliary and L.E. Williams donated the time and skills to build them.
The department welcomes any suggestions and comments from the Albertson Fire District residents and appreciates all that has been done to make it on the best department in the county.
